"I knew that Alex would retire suddenly because last time he announced he was going to retire it didn't go right," said Redknapp. "You were waiting any time and if he was going to do it was going to be at the end of a successful season. They won the league by a convincing margin last year and maybe he felt it was a good time. He's gone out where he's always been, at the top. He's been a fantastic manager and he thought it was the right time. He's going to have a bit of time to himself now and enjoy his life.
"I think David is a great choice. I'm pleased to see a British manager get a job like that at a top club. I'm sure David will do well. He's a bit like Fergie in lots of ways. He's very dedicated to the job and he knows what he wants. I'm sure he'll get it there. He'll change things round, I'm sure.
"He's bringing his own staff in and I think he'll make one or two other changes.
"I'm sure he'll sign a few players to put his stamp on the team and I'm sure he'll be a big success.
"It's a massive job. It's a hard job but it's a great job. It's one of the big clubs in world football. It's a fantastic football club and a great opportunity for him."
