Red-card harsh for Chelsea defender Cahill says ex-Premier League ref Clattenburg

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg thinks that Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill was unfortunate to get a red card in the 3-2 defeat to Burnley on Saturday.

The Blues skipper was sent off for his lunge on Clarets midfielder Steven Defour in the 14th minute when the game was still goalless.

"When you see the impact, it doesn't add up to where he is holding his shin because the studs weren't direct to the leg," he told talkSPORT.

"They actually missed and when you watch Gary Cahill's reaction at the end, he actually turns his foot to avoid contact with the studs, but also to defend the ball because he thinks Defour is going to clear the ball up; he turns his leg at the last minute to stop the pass going forward.

"That's why I think it's harsh, but I've had many replays to see it looks harsh."
