Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is delighted with the leadership skills of Wayne Rooney.

Van Gaal insists he is open minded - and if Rooney has got a better idea then he will roll with it.

He said: "I think he is the most social of guys and also very responsible. I think he trusts me, so that is also very important.

"And I trust him. So when he comes to me and has remarks, I always pay attention to him. He has the confidence to say things which are not always normal for players to say.

"So that is also good for the atmosphere in the dressing room.

"I think he fulfils my expectations unbelievably well. I am very happy and proud for him.

"As a player he is an example for everybody because his mentality is also from a very high level.

"And I don't think many players have experienced what Wayne has for the last three or four weeks.

"You have written about him that he was not good enough anymore. I have read that. You can say, 'I was not the one' but I have read that.

"I know what I want but I'm an open guy. I speak about everything but also with all my other players.

"I am more open than every other coach - with my players, my press officer, my staff and the media.

"So I'm amazed that you are saying I'm single minded.

"Of course I have a philosophy and it's still the same.

"You have to come up with good arguments to change my philosophy.

"But when you have a better argument than I, then I change."
