2009 MLS Cup winners Real Salt Lake defeated reigning champions Colorado Rapids 1-0 on Wednesday night, coming up with a late winner for third time in a row in this fixture. Rio Tinto Stadium in Utah played host to the last two MLS Cup winners and it was the former who came through with the points thanks to an injury time goal from Fabian Espindola.
The victory took RSL's record this campaign to a perfect four wins from four whilst the Rapids suffered their second defeat in a row but managed to stay second on the Western Conference table, three points behind last night's opponents.
RSL coach Jason Kreis knew it was not the best performance his side had produced but would have been happy to take the points.
"It wasn't our best. No doubt about that," he said.
Salt Lake will now prepare for the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League final against Mexican club Monterrey at Estadio Tecnologio in Nuevo Leon next Wednesday.
