Real Madrid's Van der Vaart wanted Everton move

Everton have missed out on Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der Vaart, it has been revealed. Van der Vaart wanted to move to Goodison Park, but when Real told him they wanted him to stay, he opted to stick with the Spanish giants.

"He was only ever going to go to England, if he left the Bernabeu, and Everton were the only club who made direct contact," a source told the Daily Mail.

"He was very positive about joining them, but all that changed when Real called him in for a meeting and said they wanted him to stay."
