The Daily Mail says United will be given short shrift if they persist with interest in Di Maria, 23.
The Argentina winger was a United target while with Benfica and is understood to be unhappy over contract negotiations at Madrid.
But Jose Mourinho does not want to sell and will push for a compromise deal.
