Real Madrid goal scorer Gonzalo Higuain admits they were as happy to hear of Barcelona's shock defeat as they were with their own 6-1 victory over Real Betis.

Higuain, who struck in the romp, smiled afterwards: "The goals of Espanyol are a delight. It is good to see Barcelona stumble, but we have to focus on ourselves.

"Thanks to the fans, who continue to support us. We will give our all to win this Liga."

He added: "We played very well and it was reflected in the scoreline. My early goal broke the match."
