Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo says he is proud of his history with the Ballon d'Or.

Ronaldo surrendered his crown tonight to Barcelona rival Lionel Messi.

The Portuguese player, who spoke to the media alongside Messi and Neymar, the other two contenders for the award, said: "The Ballon d'Or is a very special prize. You work hard all year to achieve things as a team and also as an individual.

"It is a marvellous trophy. I have been coming here for eight years now and I have been nominated again. It is a real pleasure to be back here again. I think the most important thing is dedication and hard work. In order to obtain this type of prize you have to be professional and serious. It is no coincidence that I am here for the eighth time. Talent means nothing without effort and work. It is important for me to beat records in the Champions League and at my club, Real Madrid.

"If I am here it is because of my own merit, because the team has played well, and as a result of individual performances. I am not surprised to be here. Messi has more chance of winning, perhaps Neymar too. If I am here it is because players and coaches have voted for me. I would not be surprised at all if Leo or Neymar won because their side obtained a lot of titles. The three of us are here because of our own achievements.

“Being here does not bring pressure; and if it does, it is positive. Being here as a candidate is a great honour in itself. Of course all three of us want to win, that is normal, but ultimately, there can only be one winner. I am happy on a personal level, I scored a lot of goals, I am proud and happy of this season's work."
