Real Madrid president Florentino ready to take on Platini

New Real Madrid president Florentino Perez wants to revive plans for a European Super League. Perez has set himself on a collision course with UEFA president Michel Platini, declaring: "The G14 forum achieved its objective. The revenue for TV rights for the Champions League went up by four times.

"I think it's not enough. A local competition must always carry on in each country. This regional rivalry is attractive and is the engine that drives competition.

"But this is not incompatible with a European competition, in this case the Champions League, which is organised in a certain way.

"We need to introduce modifications so that there is a more selective group, like there is in the national league, of teams that can compete more between themselves.

"The way it is now, maybe you never play against Milan. In my previous stint as president we never faced Milan or Inter.

"Sometimes we faced Manchester United, sometimes Bayern. But to compete against the great European clubs on a permanent basis every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday would produce more income for those clubs. It is very important."
