Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho is determined to land Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric.

The People says Real do not want to pay more than £25million for a player Tottenham value at £30m, although a second option of £20m plus long-term Spurs target Lassana Diarra could be part of the deal.

Modric wanted to quit Tottenham for Chelsea last summer but chairman Daniel Levy refused to sell him. He subsequently offered to more than double Modric's £45,000-a-week salary but that offer remains unsigned.

Chelsea are still huge admirers and Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson also fancies the 26-year-old as he looks to build a side capable of reclaiming the title from Manchester City next season.
