Real Madrid midfielder Mahamadou Diarra has been ruled out for the season with a knee injury.

Exploratory surgery yesterday uncovered a problem more serious than expected and Real medical staff now expect the player to be sidelined for between six and nine months.

Hopes that Diarra would be available for the final weeks of this season have now been dashed.
