Real Madrid GM Jorge Valdano paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo after he finished the season as Spain's greatest goalscorer.

His brace in victory over Almeria saw him record goals 39 and 40 in a stellar campaign which saw the Merengues end with 102 goals to their name, seven more than champions Barcelona.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is a tremendous player and his numbers are heroic. He is loved by everyone and his contribution to this team has been very important," Valdano told the club's official website.

"This match had a party-like atmosphere and the team displayed a tremendous scoring variety."
