Real Madrid did not deserve to beat Man Utd - 'The best team lost' says Mourinho

Real Madrid manager Joes Mourinho felt his side were extremely lucky to move through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League tonight.

The Spanish champions beat Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford to progress 3-2 on aggregate but the away leg win came with plenty of fortune as Nani was inexplicably sent off just over ten minutes into the second half.

The Portuguese winger was shown a straight red card for trying to control an aerial ball when making slight contact with Alvaro Arbeloa much to the dismay of the United players and bench with the decision completely changing the context of the game.

Sergio Ramos' own-goal right after the re-start gave United a deserved lead but the man advantage allowed Real to strike back with substitute Luka Modric and former Old Trafford star Cristiano Ronaldo sending Mourinho's undeserving men through to the final eight.

"Independent of the decision, the best team lost. We didn't play well, we didn't deserve to win but football is like this," Mourinho told ITV1.

"I'm not speaking about the decision because I'm not sure about it.

"But independent of that the best team lost."
