Sir Alex Ferguson decided to step down as Manchester United manager following their Champions League exit, it has been revealed.
The Daily Star says Fergie decided it was time to step down after United's exit to Real Madrid in the Champions League on February 1.
"He realised after that game that United won't be able to compete with the big money around," said a friend last night.
