Real Madrid coach Pellegrini pleased after seeing off Xerez

Cristiano Ronaldo hit a brace on his Real Madrid comeback against Xerez.

Ronaldo struck twice on his return from suspension as Real Madrid flourished late in the game to thrash bottom club Xerez 3-0 and put pressure on leaders Barcelona.

Real dominated virtually throughout on a stodgy pitch, but had to be patient as Xerez held out for more than an hour.

Alvaro Arbeloa finally put Madrid in front after 64 minutes, before Ronaldo's quick brace finished off the spirited Andalusians.

Real coach Manuel Pellegrini said: "Xerez felt our pressure and luckily we had more room to work with and close out the match following the first goal.

"Scoring is tough no matter who the opponent is. We were up against a good Xerez team in the first half. The field of play wasn't in the best of shape, but we maintained our discipline. This team is mature and ready to battle for 90 minutes. We know we can't demolish every opponent.

"Cristiano Ronaldo attracts a lot of defenders. Scoring upon his return from suspension was the best that could happen to him."
