Real Madrid could announce the signing of Lens defender Raphael Varane today. Local French radio says Real coach Jose Mourinho has convinced the teen about choosing Madrid ahead of Manchester United.

Mourinho informed Varane, just 18, he would be his third-choice centre-half and compete with Raul Albiol as cover for Ricardo Carvalho and Pepe. The youngster will arrive to replace Ezequiel Garay and David Mateos, who are both being shown the door.

Real spent yesterday negotiating a fee of between €9-10 million with Lens for Varane, who will pen a five-year contract through to 2016.
