Real Madrid claim revenue record

Real Madrid has revealed revenues of Eur514 million for the 2011-12 financial year - a figure the club claims is a record for any sports club, reports SportBusiness. Real's revenues for the 2011-12 campaign, in which it beat arch rival FC Barcelona to the league title, represent a 7% rise on last season's generation of Eur480.2 million. The club said its net debt fell by 26.5% to Eur124.7 million, but it also reported a 23.3% fall in its yearly profits.

Real's net profit saw a significant 31.7% rise year-on-year to Eur31.6 million in 2010-11, but this has now dropped back to Eur24.2 million.

The club said in a statement: "This variation is due to increased costs arising from securities premiums, changes in tax regulations, hedging of contingencies and risks derived from the evolution of the economic context, and increased amortisation expenses from investments made. It is noteworthy that the financial result of the previous year included a non-recurrent tax financial income."

By contrast, Barcelona signed off on record profits of Eur48.8 million for the 2011-12 season. The Catalan club increased its revenues by Eur21.5 million to Eur494.9 million and cut its expenditure by Eur31.5 million to Eur441.1 million. Barcelona's total debt, which once stood at Eur420 million two years ago, was reduced to Eur335 million.
