Real Madrid boss Zidane hopeful on injured pair Ronaldo, Benzema for Man City return

Zinedine Zidane has his fingers crossed that Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema can return to fitness for next week's Champions League semi-final second leg.

Real Madrid played out a 0-0 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night and did so without leading scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, who failed a late fitness test, while second top scorer Karim Benzema was withdrawn at half-time.

The prospect of having Ronaldo and Benzema in full flight for next Wednesday's return bout at the Santiago Bernabeu is certainly a positive one for Zidane but he is not banking on the presence of the Portuguese and the French stars to simply turn the tie in his side's favour after a solid showing from Manuel Pellegrini's City.

"We hope that they can both be fit for the second leg, that's the idea," said Zidane. "But we can't say right now.

"We have to see. We have to take it day by day and see how they are.

"Cristiano felt something after that last training session. That's why he didn't play.

"Karim, it was a little bit different. But at the end of the day, little by little, he felt a little bit worse in himself. We don't want to gamble with his fitness.

"We know how important both players are for us."
