Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster is chasing Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker. Sport says Schuster has major concerns over his central defence and wants Real to bid for Germany international Mertesacker in January.
Bayern Munich are also chasing the centre-half, but Real are in the boxseat as Werder are reluctant to sell to a Bundesliga rival.
