"If now the Olympic Games are in London, it's because of him," Mourinho said of Beckham.
"It's because of Sebastian Coe, it's because of other people, but he was the most important face of that project. I don't understand why he's not playing now. I cannot understand.
"I'm so sorry he's not there. ... I don't understand why such a big personality in that project is now playing this match when he should be in the Olympics."
Mourinho admits he would've liked to have coached the former Manchester United and Real star.
"I'm so sorry I could not have been his coach, because I would love it," Mourinho told the LA Times. "Now it's too late because David is in the last years of his career."
