Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has confirmed he came close to taking the England job.

Mourinho admits he was on the verge of taking charge in 2007.

In an interview with ABC newspaper he said: "I was on the verge of coaching the English national team in 2007 … on the verge, eh! I thought about it carefully and I said no because I knew that within two months I would be unhappy. National team coach is not a life for me right now, with a game once a month, waiting two years for a serious competition."
