Reading's Ingimarsson quits Iceland

Ivar Ingimarsson has opted to call time on his international career in order to focus on his club duties with Reading.

With Iceland unable to qualify for Euro 2008, the defender is not prepared to go through another qualification campaign and has opted to step away from the international scene.

"I spoke to the new Iceland manager (Olafur Johanesson) and I decided this would be my last qualifying competition," he told the Reading Chronicle.

"It was only fair to tell him I'd made a decision to quit permanently at the end of the campaign. As we have only one game left against Denmark, he called me to say he's decided to go with players who would be available in the long-term which is totally understandable.

"I feel I more or less need this. It's taken me a long time to reach Premiership level and it's very hard to keep playing consistently well when you have international commitments.

"In the past I've always played the majority of games in a domestic season. To do that now I need the international breaks to recover."
