The Sunday Mirror says Brian McDermott is ready to make Barnsley midfielder Jacob Butterfield his first summer signing for Premier League new-boys Reading.

The Royals boss looks set to hijack Newcastle's swoop for the England under-21 international - and also see off competition from Everton, Aston Villa, Southampton and Middlesbrough.

Butterfield,21, is out of contract at the end of June, and Toon have already held talks with the Bradford-born schemer's advisors about a five-year deal.
