Reading are set to make Nicky Shorey the highest paid player in the club's history to keep him away from West Ham United in January.

The Mirror says Hammers boss Alan Curbishley had a £4m bid for the England left-back rejected last week, and Reading director of football Nicky Hammond said: "That was well below our valuation. I'm still hopeful we can persuade Nicky to sign a new contract."
