Championship strugglers Reading stunned Liverpool at Anfield by coming from a goal down to win 2-1 after extra time. Shane Long scored the winner for the Royals in the first half of extra time as he glanced home Brynjar Gunnarsson's inch perfect cross.
Reading's performance fully deserved this result particularly after they had gone behind to an unfortunate own goal from Ryan Bertrand on the stroke of half time when he deflected Steven Gerrard's cross into his own net.
The visitor's had the better of the chances in the first forty five minutes against a sorry looking Liverpool who simply looked average.
The Reds came more into the game in the second half and briefly threatened to score a decisive second but Reading clung on until the final minute when substitute Long was fouled by Yossi Benayoun inside the penalty area.
Gylfi Sigurdsson then levelled from the spot with the coolest of penalties.
The expected extra time onslaught of Liverpool never happened as they failed to cope with the losses through injury of Gerrard and Fernando Torres.
Reading held on comfortably for their first ever victory at Anfield and the final whistle was greeted by boos from the Liverpool faithful.
