Reading boss Steve Coppell admits they attempted to sign Everton defender Joleon Lescott when he was preparing to leave Wolves.

Coppell said: "When the stark choice was made between Everton and ourselves, we were very politely told Everton were his first choice but he would look at us if it fell through.

"But we knew that anyway. To be honest, if there was a choice between Everton and us now, people would still choose Everton."
