Reading boss Brian McDermott is delighted for Shane Long over his success at West Bromwich Albion.

McDermott was chief scout when he discovered Long playing for League of Ireland side Cork City.

McDermott's report earned Long a move to the Madejski Stadium and he went on to score 46 goals in 174 league games.

McDermott, whose side have won just one point from their first three games, said: "He was only 18 when I saw him first.

"I knew then he was going to be a top player because of his athleticism.

"He has come on in leaps and bounds. Unfortunately we did not have the resources to keep him."
