Reading boss Steve Coppell insists he's not interested in the England job.
England now require Russia to slip up against Israel or Andorra and Coppell, capped 42 times while a Manchester United winger, admitted it now looked as though England would be absent from the finals in Switzerland and Austria next summer.
He said: "You would have to say no, realistically, we will not qualify. There is still hope so where there is hope, you do hope."
Failure to reach the finals will inevitably intensify the pressure on Steve McClaren to step down and Coppell, who has been voted manager of the year for the past two seasons, was quick to rule himself out of any future running.
He said: "It will never happen. I don't have any ambition other than beating Blackburn on Saturday."
