Reading boss Steve Coppell is confident Marcus Hahnemann will be fit for the start of the new season.
The goalkeeper injured his hand on the final day of last term and had to have two plates and 16 screws inserted over the summer.
Coppell expects the American keeper to be ready to face champions Manchester United at Old Trafford on 12th August.
"He'll be close for the start of the season I think. He's not close to a game at the moment but he will be come the first Saturday," Coppell told the club's official website.
"At the age of 35 it's not like he needs four games to get up to speed. He knows what he's doing."
