Rashford to follow Man Utd captain Rooney by making England debut against Australia

Manchester United youngster Marcus Rashford is set to follow in the footsteps of his skipper Wayne Rooney when England plays Australia in a friendly on Friday.

Hodgson has indicated that he will hand the 18-year-old his international debut at the Stadium of Light.

Almost 13 years ago, Rooney also made his debut for the Three Lions in a game against the Socceroos.

"We'd hope so, yes," Hodgson said when asked about the possibility of Rashford playing on Friday.

"I don't really know what to expect because don't forget Rashford was a bit unlucky that we selected him and the amount of time we're going to have with him is very, very short. It will be Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning we go back to the Grove and I have to make a decision on the 23 players.

"We will have to wait and see. There is no doubt I made the right decision putting him in this large group because the lad has enormous talent.

"I'm not afraid to give young players a chance and I don't dismiss them on the basis of their age. But where he is playing we actually have a lot of competition for places and there isn't an awful lot of chance for him to stamp his authority on myself and the coaching staff.

"But I really am ruling nothing out. His performance in the FA Cup final was very good.

"I'm delighted I shall be seeing him and then we will have to wait to see whether I will be seeing a lot of him in the summer or I will probably be seeing him in the future."
