Roma coach Claudio Ranieri was beaming after their 3-1 defeat of Fiorentina.

“I wanted this response from the lads. When they play like this they are attractive, practical and get results,” he said of the 3-1 win over Fiorentina.

“I left 35 years ago and going up those steps I remembered the last game I played for Roma saw us beat Cagliari 2-0 in the era of Gigi Riva. I hoped it was a good sign!”

Francesco Totti bagged a brace and set up another for Daniele De Rossi before Alberto Gilardino's late consolation strike.

“Totti is unpredictable and had a fantastic game tonight. He scored, created and had another goal disallowed.

“We desired this victory and a signal to our fans as well as to ourselves. We have to continue battling this way, as I like to see determination and speed of thought.

“The lads had lost that, but I hope they are back on the right path. One match cannot dictate our status and we need to see how it goes in future.”

Ranieri had said that Totti needed to change his ways, as the opponents were now accustomed to his movement.

“Totti needs to get accustomed to a different set of movements. [Mirko] Vucinic broke the deadlock with some great work to earn the penalty.”
