Rangers shocked by Malmo in Champions League qualifier

Scottish champions Rangers are on the verge of failing to qualify for the Champions League after a shock loss to Malmo yesterday.

The Glasgow giants went down 1-0 to the Swedish outfit at Ibrox, making their task of pushing through to the group stage of Europe's premier club competition extremely difficult as they have never won a European tie after dropping the first leg.

Daniel Larsson's 18th minute goal separated the two sides and left 'Gers boss Ally McCoist with a big problem on his hands but the new gaffer is confident of getting past the third qualifying stage.

"One of the worrying things is that we didn't start the game well enough. I sat here on Saturday after the Hearts game and said the same thing," McCoist said.

"In the first half we weren't nearly good enough. And the standard of goal we're losing at the moment is worrying.

"But as disappointed as I am, the tie is far from over. I reckon we created enough chances in the second half to believe we can go to Malmo and score.

"They looked sharper than us and fitter in terms of how they went about it.

"Is that because they're well into their season?

"I don't know and it doesn't help us anyway.

"The fact is we need to be a lot better in the second leg and I'm determined we will be.

"We gave them too much space and time on the ball. Malmo didn't surprise us because I knew they're a good team.

"We now have to score or we're out of the competition but I'm confident we can do that.

"The boys in the dressing room are disappointed with the result - and we had a brief chat - but we can still get through."
