Scottish giants Rangers once threw themselves at one of football's biggest names nearly two decades ago, and it almost paid off.
The Brazilian striker was hot property back in 1997 having scored 38 goals in 46 matches during his one and only season with Barcelona, but contract problems forced him out of Camp Nou.
It was then that Rangers made a move for one of the greatest striker's in history but ultimately, it came down to Ibrox or Inter Milan for the man who went on to score prolifically for the Nerazzurri and Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Ronaldo's agent Giovanni Branchini recalled that the £20million contract payout for interested clubs did not deter 'Gers but the player opted to move to Italy instead of Scotland - and the rest, as they say, is history.
"The clause in his contract was a novelty at the time and it scared a lot of clubs off," he said.
"The three who were really interested were Inter, Lazio and Glasgow Rangers, who followed negotiations all the way.
"The offer from Glasgow Rangers was incredible. They told us he didn't have to play on a Saturday in the Scottish League. They were desperate to win the Champions League and were going to allow him to play in European matches only.
"But Inter had followed him from when he used to play in Brazil. Barcelona reneged on a new contract and Inter were the first club to meet the release clause so he went there."
