Rangers no.2 McDowall - Adam has earned the right to be at Liverpool

Rangers assistant Kenny McDowall is of firm belief that Charlie Adam has thoroughly deserved his chance to play with a club like Liverpool.

The 25-year old Scotland international midfielder joined the Reds from Blackpool in the summer after departing Rangers for Bloomfield Road back in 2009.

Adam spent close to a decade with the 'Gers first team but was often overlooked by management and regularly criticised by fans of the Ibrox club, however, he has gone on to make a name for himself in the English top flight and McDowall feels it is well-deserved.

"Charlie always had ability and a great belief in himself," he told SunSport ahead of tonight's friendly between the two clubs at Ibrox.

"You couldn't knock him down, that's for sure.

"Even when he went out on loan to a few clubs, he was still trying to score from the halfway line - I think he actually did it on a couple of occasions.

"He always had great belief in himself. Charlie believed he could go right to the top - although it maybe surprised me he got to Liverpool.

"But he did well enough at Blackpool to suggest he could play at the highest level in England.

"He's earned the right to be where he is by showing people down there he can play.

"There were games, when he was at Rangers, where he was booed on as a sub.

"It's worked out very well for Charlie."
