The Evening Times says Gers could raid Killie for both star striker Steven Naismith and keeper Smith.
Smith, 24, is on a Bosman and impressed Gers keeping coaching Billy Thomson after playing 31 times last season for Killie.
Rangers have also moved to sign Scotland Under-19 keeper Alan Martin from Motherwell on a free.
