Rangers legend Butcher surprised Hutton rejected Spurs

Rangers legend Terry Butcher is surprised by Alan Hutton's decision to turn down a lucrative move to Tottenham.

"Like Rangers, Spurs are in the UEFA Cup and, under Ramos, I'm certain they will improve and will continue to improve," said the former Motherwell and Brentford manager. "He has already turned them round a bit and improved their league position. There's only one way for Spurs now - and that's up.

"That's why I suppose I was a bit surprised by Alan's decision. Spurs are not as bad a team or a club as people think.

"Alan is clearly enjoying playing his football at Ibrox and is comfortable in his surroundings. There is nothing wrong with that. He may not have fancied going down there and fighting for his place - at Rangers he is guaranteed first-team football.

"It's a huge football boost for Rangers that one of their players has turned down the Premiership in preference of sticking with them. As I know well, playing for Rangers is a huge thing and it's something you never really appreciate fully until it's no longer there.

"But, while I don't know the lad, it was certainly a move worthy of time and consideration."
