The Scottish Football Association have told Rangers to forget handing Barrie McKay a five-year deal, reports the Scottish Sun. Hampden rules prevent clubs giving contracts of more than three years to players before their 18th birthday.
Boss Ally McCoist must now decide whether to give 17-year-old McKay a shorter deal or delay the five-year one until his next birthday.
SFA registrations chief Sandy Bryson said: "They could, if they choose, enter a three-year contract for him just now and, when he turns 18 - on December 30 - offer him a longer one then if everyone is still agreeable to do so."
