Rangers coach McDowall: Liverpool's Adam always had the ability

Rangers officials aren't surprised by Charlie Adam's success at Liverpool.

Gers coach Kenny McDowall is not surprised at the way the midfielder has turned his career around.

McDowall told the Scottish Sun : "Charlie always had ability and a great belief in himself.

"You couldn't knock him down, that's for sure. Even when he went out on loan to a few clubs, he was still trying to score from the halfway line - I think he actually did it on a couple of occasions.

"He always had great belief in himself. Charlie believed he could go right to the top - although it maybe surprised me he got to Liverpool.

"But he did well enough at Blackpool to suggest he could play at the highest level in England. He's earned the right to be where he is by showing people down there he can play.

"It's worked out very well for Charlie. There were games, when he was at Rangers, where he was booed on as a sub. It was difficult for him here, but you have to remember the players we had in our team at that time.

"Charlie was still young and wasn't getting a regular game, but he did get into the team at times and played in a lot of big games.

"A lot of it was down to Charlie's confidence. He maybe overdid it at times when things weren't coming off for him. He wasn't a mature player and the support got on his back a bit. If you are playing for Rangers you need a bit of experience.

"He's gallus enough and that was why we played him in bigger games. He didn't hide and when you are at the Old Firm you can't have players who don't want the ball.

"Charlie was always keen to take it, even when people were getting on his back.

"We never really had a settled player in the wide left position and felt Charlie could be a steady player for us there.

"He wasn't a winger but he would fill the gap, had quality on the ball, and his set plays were vital, especially in those bigger games."
