Rangers chasing Sunderland striker Murphy

Rangers are chasing Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy.

The Herald says the Republic of Ireland internationalist has been informed by Steve Bruce that he is surplus to requirements, allowing the Rangers manager to enter the race to sign the 27-year-old.

Eric Black, Sunderland's assistant manager, is understood to have tipped off his friend and Rangers first-team coach Kenny McDowall about the striker's availability.

Smith has already expressed an interest in Portsmouth strikers Tommy Smith and David Nugent as well as Middlesbrough and Scotland frontman Lee Miller.

A bid for Murphy could be tabled within the next fortnight.
