Walter Smith insists Kris Boyd's double in the 3-1 win over Hamilton was for the good of Rangers and not a riposte to Scotland coach George Burley. The Gers boss said: "He's trained really hard since the start of the season and he's probably in the best physical condition he has been in since I came back.
"There is a determination about him to do well this season. It's not just the recent happenings that have made him do that - he has been of that attitude throughout the season.
"This season, there is maybe a little more determination to try to improve aspects of his game that myself and other managers have been a little bit critical of.
"He's trying and, as long as it doesn't stop him from scoring goals, it's fine."
Boyd has now netted six times from seven starts, and Smith added: "He's got a couple of goals and maybe a slightly better final ball and he might have had another one or two.
"He always does that for us and hopefully we can continue to create. We've worked hard on that and tried to improve on that aspect.
"We will keep him playing in the majority of matches and he has already played in the majority of matches this season."
