"When I came here in January, people were saying Kris was unfit, that he wasn't this and he wasn't that," observed Smith. "The lad himself, with no prompting from anyone, has worked extremely hard to get his weight and body fats down. He is as fit as he has been.
"He is going through one of those unfortunate spells where everything he is hitting just now is being saved by the keeper, hitting off people or whatever. If you are a goalscorer, you have got to put up with that.
"In all other aspects of the game, he is working really hard for us and doing well for us. Anyone who knows him will know that he will definitely come back and get goals for us.
"That's what he does and I don't think there are too many who do it better. Yes, there are aspects of his game he has to improve on, but he will remain the best goalscorer in our country."
