Smith told the Daily Record: "Jimmy has been getting stick from Aberdeen fans since he went there or at least that's what it looks like from the outside.

"Even at the start of last season he was getting a bit of stick and he went on to get them their best finish in the league for a number of years. For managers just now it's just a situation we have to accept and get on with. It's an aspect of the game nowadays that I don't really understand but that's a manager's life now.

"It doesn't matter what you do the previous season, if you don't start the next one in a manner the fans think is acceptable you come under pressure.

"I think Jimmy has been doing a great job at Aberdeen."
