Rangers boss Ally McCoist hopes he can keep hold of striker Nikica Jelavic beyond January.
The Croatian striker was the subject of a failed £6.5million bid from Leicester in August towards the end of the transfer window.
And the Scottish champions could have their resolve tested again in January, with Liverpool having also been linked with their top goalscorer.
"We fully appreciate, and are well aware, that financially we cannot compete with the vast majority of the teams in the top two divisions down south.
"That's just the nature of the beast at the moment.
"You have to weight it up. A lot of players this season chose not to come to us and to go down south or stay down south and that's something we have to deal with."McCoist said: "It's one of the selling points, there is a greater opportunity at a club like this to compete for major honours.
