Rangers to beat Birmingham for Man Utd's Fletcher

Rangers are set to beat Birmingham City for Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher.

The People says Alex McLeish was keen on taking the Manchester United midfielder to St Andrew's on loan and believed he had his man.

But Ranger boss Walter Smith has stepped in at the last-minute.

The temporary move away from Old Trafford will either make or break the 23-year-old, who already has over 30 Scotland caps. Smith has worked with Fletcher for the national team and swooped once he became aware of the player's availability.

With Anderson, Michael Carrick, Owen Hargreaves and Paul Scholes to choose from, Sir Alex Ferguson is not short of options at the heart of his United midfield.
