Rangers are battling Premiership interest for former France Under-21 centre-half Yohan Benalouane.
Newcastle United, West Ham United and Sevilla are credited with an interest in the French-Tunisian player, who has turned down invitations to play for the North African country in the hope of making the step up to the full France squad.
The Daily Mail says Ibrox boss Walter Smith admitted his interest in 23-year-old St Etienne defender Benalouane, saying: "We are doing our best to source and sign new players before the start of the season and Benalouane is one who has been brought to our attention."
A regular for St Etienne, with 40 appearances last season, Benalouane believes a move to Rangers - and the chance to play in the Champions League - could enhance his international ambitions.
