Josh Harrop struck twice and Joe Rothwell was also on the scoresheet during a game riddled with errors but the victory is enough to take the hosts four points clear at the top of the table ahead of the run-in.
Reece Oxford and Jordan Brown struck for the Hammers.
Adnan Januzaj and Rafael both played full games for United.
