Racing Santander have lodged an appeal with the Spanish league in the hope of replacing long term injured forward Oscar Serrano with a replacement despite the transfer window being closed. Serrano injured ligaments in his left knee in early January ruling him out for the season, and they now hope they can take him out of their squad list which will allow them to bring in another signing.
The player in the frame is Birmingham's Nikola Zigic - a club legend, and one who new Indian owner Ali Syed is determined to bring back to Santander.
Talks are understood to be continuing with Zigic's agent Milan Calasan, but it remains highly unlikely that relegation threatened Birmingham would even consider letting the Serb leave.
