Quiet transfer period ends with just £20million of purchases

The January transfer window has ended without the usual kerfuffle of last-minute deals being pushed through and a little amount of money being spent.

It seems clubs have felt the recent global financial crisis and decided to stay away from any dealings with some potential big-money moves even falling over at the death.

Cashed-up Manchester City again spent the most but it was nothing like their summer haul with a measly £7million being spent on Middlesbrough's Adam Johnson compared to the huge amount they used to lure players like Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure, Joleon Lescott and Roque Santa Cruz to name just a few.

Birmingham's £10million push for Tottenham's Roman Pavlyuchenko did not eventuate but the Spurs did lose a striker with Robbie Keane moving to Celtic on loan.

West Ham spent £2.5million on Blackburn's Benni McCarthy and also got Mido on loan from Middlesbrough whilst Wigan also parted with that amount for Crystal Palace youngster Victor Moses.

Asmir Begovic joined Stoke City from Portsmouth for £3million and a host of clubs bought players in on loan with Fulham doing the most deals by bringing in Nicky Shorey from Aston Villa and Stefano Okaka from AS Roma.
