Queensland Roar grab late winner against Newcastle

Queensland Roar managed an injury time winner against the Newcastle Jets in their A-League clash at Suncorp Stadium yesterday. The Jets took the lead through skipper Joel Griffiths in the 26th minute when Jobe Wheelhouse played him through and the striker was able to finish deftly over Roar goalkeeper Liam Reddy.

The lead lasted until stoppage time in the first half when youngster Mitch Nichols found room for a diving header from close range after a Matt McKay corner, giving the home fans hope at the main break.

Queensland continued to attack in the second half and finally got the reward when Sergio van Dijk flicked a neat shot past Ante Covic from a Danny Titatto cross in injury time for a much-needed home win, sending the Roar to third on the table and leaving the Jets languishing at the bottom.

Roar coach Frank Farina was delighted with the result and happy that his pre-game tactics worked.

"I wanted Mitch (Nichols) to be getting into the box a lot more with Sergio (van Dijk), particularly with Tahj (Minniecon) and Michael (Zullo) getting down the flanks," Farina said.

"It's great that we finally do what they've done to us a few times over the past couple of seasons."
