QPR take captaincy from Barton

QPR have stripped Joey Barton of the club captaincy and fined him six weeks' wages for his misdemeanours on the final day of last season.

The 29-year old midfielder copped a 12-match ban and was fined £75,000 for elbowing Carlos Tevez, kneeing Sergio Aguero and trying to headbutt Vincent Kompany when the R's lost to champions Manchester City in mid-May and has now been punished further by his club.

"QPR FC can confirm Joey Barton has been fined six weeks' wages and will no longer be club captain," read a club statement.

"If Barton seriously breaches the club's disciplinary procedures again, the club reserves the right to terminate his contract."

Barton added on the club's official website: "My behaviour was wrong and I accept the punishment that has been imposed upon me as a result.

"I apologise to the manager, my team-mates and of course the QPR fans for my actions.

"I also apologise to the Manchester City players, staff and supporters.
